Stock Market Open On Weekends

Stock Market Open On Weekends – Despite the old adage that business never sleeps, businesses are certainly not shy about taking time off, especially on the weekends. The New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq, the nation’s largest stock exchange, maintain trading hours similar to banking hours. Because of this, the stock market is closed on weekends. However, with the advent of better technology, investors can trade on Saturday and Sunday – with more risk.

The two major stock exchanges in New York have the same business hours. They are open for business between 9:30 am and 4 pm. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange also hold after hours trading from 4 to 8 p.m., weekdays only.

Although the New York Stock Exchange was normally open for part of the trading day on Saturday, this practice was discontinued in 1952 due to the traditional weekday trading schedule.

Like many other businesses, major exchanges take time off for the holidays. Both exchanges are closed on New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The two exchanges also close early on the Friday after Thanksgiving, July 3, and December 24. On early closing days, the market closes at 1 p.m., and after hours cross trading ends at 1:30 p.m.

Even though the main markets are not open on the weekends, some investors are in a hurry to profit from the markets and trade the after-hours sessions. Even though the exchanges are closed, the online network allows even casual investors to buy and sell stocks when the markets are not normally open, including weekends.

However, there are fewer traders when the market is closed, and this can make it difficult to find a buyer or seller.

Trading outside the operating hours of the exchange is not without problems. Because the number of shares traded is smaller, the price is more affected by a single sale, and is more volatile. It also makes it difficult to match the seller’s asking price with the buyer’s offer, making it more difficult to complete the transaction.

Prices quoted during after-hours sessions are not “official” and do not reflect the stock price at the open. Because the system supports limit orders – orders where you place the maximum bid, and let the computer match you with the seller – it can be difficult to find the best price during after-hours trading.

Weekend trading is how you access the index and crypto markets on Saturdays and Sundays. This means, for example, if you think the Brexit news break on Saturday will cause the FTSE 100 to move, you don’t have to wait until the markets open on Monday to trade.

Can You Sell Or Buy Stocks On The Weekend?

Weekend prices for indices are quoted separately for weekday pairs, based on our view of the outlook for that market based on client business and news flow. As a result, you can use these markets to hedge your weekly positions. Weekend index positions will roll over to regular weekday positions if left open after the Sunday close, with any remaining stops or limits.

For cryptocurrencies, since the market opened over the weekend, we recently extended our weekday market. This means that any cryptocurrency positions will continue to move throughout the weekend, and your stops and limits can still be exercised.

We are the only provider that allows you to trade the FTSE 100, Germany 40, Wall Street, US Tech 100 and HS50 on weekends.

Market Open This Weekend

Let’s say you go long on our weekly Wall Street contracts when the market closes on Friday. Some negative news is expected on Saturday morning which will cause Wall Street to fall in value.

To offset your current position, you open a short position on our Wall Street weekend. If your prediction is correct, your short positions will result in a profit and offset some of the losses on Wall Street’s weekday positions.

If you are still holding your weekend position when the market closes on Sunday at 22:40 UK time, it will automatically be reduced by your existing week trade – that is, unless there is a stop or limit set. In this case, your trade will move to a working day position with the same stops and limits. So you will have both long and short trades when the weekday market reopens.

Take a position in the weekend market and the broker only offers FTSE 100 and Wall Street trading on Saturday and Sunday.

Tips For Trading After Hours And On Weekends

With an index, your weekday positions are separated from your weekend positions, allowing you to speculate on market developments over the weekend without having to change weekday positions. The weekend market is distinguished from the weekday market by name. For example, instead of trading the ‘FTSE 100’ on Saturday, you would trade the ‘Weekend UK 100’.

Weekend index trading hours are from 04:00 on Saturday to 22:40 on Sunday (UK time). Positions opened at 22:40 (UK time) on Sunday will be rolled into business day positions when the market resumes at 23:00 on Sunday. Please note, however, that the FTSE 100 and Germany 40 will open for trading two minutes later than usual, at 11.02pm (UK time).

Cryptocurrency CFD trading on Saturday and Sunday works a little differently – since the basic market is open during the weekend, we have expanded our weekday market. So any CFD positions on cryptocurrencies will move over the weekend, and stops/limits may move.

Stock Market Open On Weekends

As our crypto CFD market is now available on weekends, any stops and restrictions you hold will be affected by our extended trading hours. This extra trading period means you have more time to speculate on the price in this market, as well as any stops or restrictions you have on opening or closing positions can be filled over the weekend.

Our Saturday and Sunday markets on GBP/USD, EUR/USD and USD/JPY are separate from their weekday equivalents. This means you can speculate on market developments over the weekend without having to change your existing weekly position. The weekend cable (GBP/USD) is distinguished from the weekday market by its name on the platform – ‘Weekend GBP/USD’. The same principle applies to EUR/USD (‘Wekkenn EUR/USD’) and USD/JPY (‘Wekkenn USD/JPY’).

Trading hours in the weekend forex pairs are from 8am on Saturday to 8.40pm on Sunday (UK time). Any positions open at 20:40 (UK time) on Sunday will be transferred to weekday positions when the weekday market resumes 20 minutes later at 9:00 pm.
