Individuals must be tested for language proficiency in their work languages before acting as translators. A language proficiency test assesses a language’s competence (written or spoken), but not translation skills.

As with any profession, training is essential to becoming a professional translator. Training can be done in face-to-face or online sessions, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. Most importantly, a program must offer a high-quality curriculum and an experienced instructor to be worth your time and money!

How Do I Become A Medical Interpreter?
As a translator, we should always keep in mind the importance of taking care of our voice. This valuable webinar from CHIA (California Interpreter Health Association), Taking Care of Your Voice: Voice Care and Voice Disease Prevention, provides an overview of voice technology and tips and exercises to maintain and strengthen our voice abilities. To demonstrate these skills and become a certified translator, candidates must pass the following two tests:

The certified translator exam is offered online only and consists of six tasks. Jobs include different positions from different fields, including at least one from the health field and one from the legal field.
Why Do Medical Interpreters Need To Be Certified?
As part of your exam preparation, you should familiarize yourself with the whitelist of resources that you will be able to access during the exam.

Darren Reed started working in bilingual areas 15 years ago. She is a nationally certified Spanish medical interpreter as well as a federally certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter. After graduating from an interpreter training program at a community college, Darren opened his own private practice as a triple-interpreter. He volunteers his time with several professional translation organizations. Darren is a licensed interpreter trainer, licensed cultural instructor, and internship supervisor. She also has advanced certification in TESOL and second language acquisition. He loves helping new translators find their niche.
Yulia Sprov is a Russian and English medical translator for CoreCHI and WA DSHS, based in Seattle, Washington. Yulia first started interpreting 10 years ago in her hometown of Novosibirsk, Russia, and has since interpreted in many settings – from an aircraft carrier to a live psychiatric operating room. Most recently, he has translated for several hospitals in Seattle, Washington.

Nanyi Mateo is NBCMI’s Spanish-speaking medical translator. He is the founder and lead trainer of InterpreMed, a local training website for professional and aspiring translators. He has created more than 40 hours of formal and practical applications such as memory retention and note taking exercises. You have developed a standard notation system that you teach in your memory retention classes. He currently works as a telephone and video medical interpreter for several companies throughout the United States.
Gustavo R. Negrete received his education at California State University Fullerton, a comprehensive study program in English-Spanish, Spanish-English court translation. In 2014, she achieved national certification through the National Certification Board for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) and currently serves as NBCMI Secretary. He is also a Certified HIPAA Privacy Professional (CHPE). Gustavo is a former translator and interpreter at Riverside University Health System (RUHS). Currently, he is the President and CEO of the translation and micro company, Vector Language Solutions, which provides on-site, OPI, VRI and translation services for clients, and is the main curator and trainer of TransInterpreting.
