First of all, I would like to dispel the misconception that you need to spend thousands of dollars to set up a good ecommerce website. For example, there are several completely free and fully featured open source shopping cart software packages.
In fact, if you’re comfortable with computers, you can launch a full-featured shopping cart for less than $5/month. By the way, this is how my wife and I started our e-commerce store.
He used to have a big budget, so he ran an online store on a free open source platform, spending only $5 a month for his first two years. (I’ll show you how to do this later in this post).
How To Make Money With A Website Without Selling Anything
Today, the store has seven-figure sales per year and I’m still on the same free platform that I started with.
However, what I’m trying to say is that none of the solutions I recommend today cost a lot of money, and today his 7, 8, and has a nine-figure business.
Open source software is software maintained by a small group or community and has the advantage of being free for anyone to use. Linux is probably the most famous example, and there are many open source shopping carts available for free download.
A key advantage of open source shopping carts is that they are not tied to any particular company or service provider. You can take your tent anywhere and there is no charge.

Using an open source platform is a lot like owning an unlocked cell phone. Feel free to use any carrier, but it’s free if you own the phone.
Another big advantage is that you have 100% control over the source code (meaning you own the phone and all the technology). As a result, if you need to add a special feature that is very specific to your shop, you can either implement it yourself or hire a developer.
Over the years, I’ve tried many open source shopping carts, including WooCommerce, Open Cart, Prestashop, Magento, and my favorite is WooCommerce.

It’s easy to use, stable, built on the #1 blogging platform in the world, and has a great developer community. Did I mention it’s free too :)?
WooCommerce is the world’s most used shopping cart and boasts the largest ecosystem of third-party developers for any e-commerce platform.
The best thing about WooCommerce is that it runs on WordPress, the world’s most popular content management system. If you already have a WordPress blog and want to add ecommerce functionality to it, WooCommerce is easy.
In this day and age, content marketing with blogs is a given. So it makes sense to integrate your blog and your e-commerce store on the same platform.

The only downside to running a shopping cart on top of WordPress is that WordPress was not designed for ecommerce out of the box. As a result, WooCommerce and other ecommerce plugins tend to run a little slower unless optimized.
But on the flip side, there are thousands of free plugins that speed things up and add extra features to your online store.

This is because most, if not all, web hosts offer one-click installers. Just click a button and you’re ready to go.
In fact, we’ve put together a quick 5-minute video tutorial that shows you exactly how to get started with WooCommerce from scratch for less than $3.

OpenCart is my girlfriend’s second favorite open source shopping cart, it’s fast, easy to use and has a very modern feel.

What I love about OpenCart is its simple and intuitive backend management interface. In addition, there are many companies and independent developers actively working on website templates, themes and plugins.
The downside of OpenCart is that if you want additional functionality that OpenCart doesn’t provide out of the box, you’ll need to purchase and install your own plugins.
Also, OpenCart isn’t as popular as WooCommerce, so it has less developer support and no free plugins available.
But overall, the out-of-the-box features should be more than enough for most users, and the cart is fast.
How To Build Your Own Website
The main drawback of using an open source platform is that you are the boss and controlling your platform is a double-edged sword.
For example, I need to manage servers. The site should not go down. You should keep your shopping cart up to date. Also, if something goes wrong, you are responsible for finding a solution.
In other words, you need to be resourceful. You must be a good problem solver. Because in the end something goes wrong.
Over the years, we’ve realized that using open source ecommerce solutions and self-hosting may not be the right solution for everyone. Some people don’t feel comfortable installing and tweaking his own website, or modifying an open source shopping cart.

I once tried to help a colleague use his OpenCart to launch an online store. Unfortunately he didn’t even have the basic knowledge to make simple changes to his shop and had to ask for help with every small change.
Open Source Shopping His Cart is free, flexible and powerful, but you need to decide if it’s better to spend your time marketing and selling than managing your website.
If you’re on a budget and don’t want the hassle of managing a website, it often makes sense to let a company manage your shopping cart for you.
I generally recommend anyone interested in setting up an online store to try open source and host his own website, but starting an online business requires a little extra effort. Some people need

As a result, it makes sense for some entrepreneurs to have a fully hosted shopping cart for peace of mind.
Some people want to skip the hassle of installing everything and have everything working right out of the box. Some prefer to focus on marketing and sales rather than building websites.
In my experience, unless you’re new to technology, probably 85% of people should pay extra to use a fully hosted platform.
