To be fair, getting paid surveys is easy and can be done at home if you have an internet connection. The sites we test are free and require no education or experience. Depending on the website, surveys can be a boring but simple way to earn a few bucks or a boring job that doesn’t pay.
Some sites pay more than others. We evaluate the sites that reveal the cash value of each survey and match them with related sites. We were scared of a site that paid compensation with a confusing points system and sent us surveys that rarely met our requirements.

The site was above average in our selection of eligible surveys. For survey points, 500 or 1000 points may seem high at first, but when converted into a real bonus, you will receive 50 cents or a dollar. Also, cashout is not possible until you reach 25,000 points, which equals $25.
Eureka Surveys Review
This site is a small survey aggregator, but it stands out. The site has a clean and easy-to-use dashboard and offers high scores for every survey you complete. The points system is live and shows you how many points per dollar you have on the dashboard. But you need to get 500 points to get cash.
Some research sites bombard users with information and opportunities, but not Opinion Outpost. A simple and intuitive website allows us to take survey after survey without much thought. For starters, we appreciate our live scoring system, which works out to 10 cents per point on our site. Most importantly, we actually make money. We can earn an average of $1.50 an hour at Opinion Outpost and cash at Amazon.
The site conducts polls exclusively through its own market research firm, Ipsos. The site offers more surveys than aggregators, but you stay on iSay for each survey, which makes the overall experience much easier. Sometimes it shows research you’ve already tried, which can be confusing.
The site offers 75 survey opportunities, the most of any site we tested. But it has the lowest success rate of 9.33% and the lowest average hourly wage. Unlike many other sites, Toluna allows users to choose research topics such as electronics and travel, which makes the job more interesting. However, this bonus does not compensate for the low salary. When converting points to cash, we earned just 71 cents an hour, one of the lowest rates of any site we tested. Our five hours are not enough to get the cheapest gift card.
New users get a $5 bonus after verifying their email address with InboxDollars. But that doesn’t account for the small amount of money made in the hour surveyed — 41 cents was the lowest of the 12 sites we tested. Sometimes the site directs us to ads that ask for our address, phone number, date of birth, month, and day instead of taking a survey.
Regardless of the site, survey earnings can be low compared to other job opportunities. For example, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and our hourly earnings range from 41 cents to $2.03 an hour. Most survey sites require a minimum score before receiving a bonus. On many sites, we don’t hit the minimum after five hours of work. (You may want to consider other hobbies that make money.)
Managing Employee Surveys
In addition to time, we refuse to provide valuable personal information to these research sites. We typically disclose birth date, zip code, income, medical conditions, ethnicity, lifestyle, and more. After spending hours in question and answer mode, we rarely think about providing these details.
“The biggest risk is not knowing how to use that data,” said Eva Velazquez, president and CEO of the Identity Theft Resource Center. “You’re really putting yourself at the mercy of these sites and saying, ‘OK, I trust you to be good stewards of the information I’m giving you.'”
Velasquez said our data could be used for questionable research or sold to health insurers. Or it could be stolen, which is a risk for websites that store personal information. Much of the information we share is seemingly innocuous—for example, our shopping habits and travel plans. But information like your date of birth can be used in combination with other stolen data to figure out who you are. So keep this in mind when answering the question.
Despite the disadvantages of online surveys, some people may find taking surveys an attractive option. After all, there are no barriers to entry and it can be done from anywhere with an internet connection.

Don’t share too much. Leave the survey if you are asked to provide your Social Security number, bank account number, or driver’s license number. Velasquez recommends being “intentional” about sharing personal information with other research sites. Create an email address just for the research site. Most survey sites send us several emails every day. Registering these sites with a separate email address will prevent poll offers from interfering with your main inbox.
Install an anti-malware program. We recommend this step if one of the survey sites redirects you to a third-party spam client.
Take a break. We spend most of our time studying with our faces glued to the computer screen. To prevent eye strain, the American Optometric Association recommends the 20/20/20 rule: Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away.
