Best Patio Cover Ideas
It’s that time of year when I start planning my summer projects. Most of the year I spend my time teaching English: grammar, writing style, paragraph boxes and some really good literature, but in the summer I can get my hands dirty and build something. This year I chose two main projects. The first will be a cover for our outdoor patio, and the second will be a natural pond. This post will cover containers and you can check out our DIY pool here.

After carefully considering the costs and benefits, the one that best suits the family’s needs is a modified trellis that not only creates shade, but also dry space.
The patio area to be covered is quite large, 24’X12′, so spanning has been a major obstacle. The two options are to run a 12′ beam and then have a 24′ truss engineered to cover the span, or run a 24′ beam and run a 12′ 2X8 to span the 10′ gap. If we chose the former, we would go with a pitched roof trimmed with cedar tongue and groove, and covered with asphalt shingles.

In the end, the cost difference is large enough that the latter is the better choice. The final cost including all finishing materials was just under $2000.
I’ve included this image so you can see the strong brackets holding the 2X8s to the beams, the size of the beams and the 4X4 diagonal braces.
Let’s start your project. This tutorial will walk you through each step. In the end, you have a shaded patio that you built yourself.
Wood has limitations, so it’s important to get accurate information about expected loads and spans. A local lumber yard is a great place to start and can tell you the size of lumber you’ll need for your project.

In this case, the span is more than 24′ in one direction, which requires an engineered beam, but the other span is only 10′, so the project only requires a set of 2′ long 2X8’s 12′ on center.
You can clearly see the difference in how the wood takes the stain in this picture. On the right is a cedar tree and on the left is a fir tree.
Another consideration for this project is the type of wood to be used. After comparing the cost and aesthetics of cedar vs. fir, canceled costs are looking for us and at a third less it is the most viable option.
Sikkens teak cedar stain turns fine #2, but after the barrel has been shaken and not shaken, the wood is much lighter because the pigment is on the bottom of the gallon dog.

When you start putting this project together, be sure to seal your posts by measuring horizontally and diagonally. If you don’t take the time to do this, you’ll be in for a lot of headaches when installing the battens and roof.
The 4×6 posts are mounted on peer pads with brackets already installed, but in retrospect, the posts should have been planted at least 3′. This will help eliminate some of the wobble that occurs when I mount 2x2s with Tuff-Tex installed. The project opening is almost 13′ high and requires extensive bracing.
The project was stabilized by attaching the 2×8 with strong brackets and nails, extensive latex batting and breaking Tuff-Tex into every other wavy wave along the 2×2.

12″ black steel L-brackets lock the beams to the posts, flat iron strips are suspended in the beams and house, and a hanging basket structure completes stabilizing the structure.

In the end, 2×6 are attached to the outside and inside of the beams in front of the back, and then thin pieces cut from the posts are used between the boards. In addition to stabilizing the structure, it is allowed to install hanging hooks and baskets that hang on the sides of the structure. I also installed a drip irrigation system which was very easy to install and worked well.
When the final touches were done and drip irrigation was added for the hanging baskets, it was time for my wife and I to enjoy the evening fire.
