This deck already has composite decking and deck railing installed. See the steps in How to Build a Deck: Composite Decks and Railings. It is common to build the frame with treated wood and use composite surface materials, as in the deck and stairs on this deck.

Composite deck ladders are typically made of pressure-treated 2 x 12 stringers spaced 8 to 16 inches apart. They rest on a solid foundation and are attached to the deck with hangers. They have risers (also called toe kicks), treads and railings. The stairs must be at least 36 inches wide.

You can build your own custom stringers or find pre-cut ones at Lowe’s. Custom built stringers allow you to match the dimensions of a set of stairs in your home, which will feel more comfortable. Whatever you choose, always make sure you follow building codes.

Determine where your bottom step is. Place a long or straight 2 x 4 level on the deck, and measure the height at the point where you want your steps to end. Use these measurements to determine the number and height of the risers.

For example, if the height is 55 inches, divide this measurement by 7, the ideal height in inches per step. Round to the nearest whole number to find the number of risers – in this case 8. Now divide 55 by 8 to get the actual height of the risers – in this case it is 6-7/8 inches.

The stair treads will be made of composite deckingplanks – two per step – making the run per step (distance from front to back) approximately 11 inches. There is a riser or toe kick on the back, made of pressure treated wood and a composite frame without grooves.

Good to Know You may want to check the height of stairs or stairs that are already familiar to you, such as indoor stairs or porch steps, to get a sense of a comfortable height. If the initial height planned for each step is too short for comfort, reduce the number of steps by 1 and recalculate.

Good to Know You will often see deck boards listed with a common (or nominal) measurement of 5/4 inch thickness. While you may indicate this measurement as 1-1/4 inches, the standard reference is 5/4 inches. Also note that the actual thickness measurement of a 5/4-inch board is usually 1 inch. Watch our video Why is 2 x 4 by 2 by 4? to learn about the difference between common/nominal measurements and actual measurements.

A concrete pad is a common type of landing. It has a bottom layer of 4 inches of gravel and extends beyond the steps about 36 inches. Step-by-step instructions for pouring a concrete pad landing can be found in How to Build a Deck: Wood Stairs and Stair Railings.

Install the legs and posts in line with the two outer marks, in the total distance of the run. You can do the feet even on the ground. See Building a Deck: Post Holes and Frames for step-by-step instructions for creating the legs and placing the posts.

When you have the lok and run determined and the legs installed, mark the stairs on 2 x 12s to create stringers.

Place the stair measurements on a square framed by riser height and run length.

Slide the square on the beam and mark how far you go and lead to the next step. Keep ticking until you have the correct number of steps set.

From the running mark you made for the first step, reduce the thickness of the leg kick – treated board and composite board – and press a perpendicular cut line. This line indicates where the stairs are attached to the deck. There will be no leg kick at this point in the stairs.

In the bottom step, subtract the thickness of a break from the increase and mark a line perpendicular to the increase. This is a line cut to allow you to run the entire set of stairs down. When the treads are installed, this cut makes the bottom step the same height as the others.

Use this stringer as a template to mark and cut the others. Good to Know You may also want to trace the stringer on the composite material to cut the fascia boards that will cover the outer stringers. Use a composite frame without grooves.

You will attach the posts on the legs you pour above and run the tie between the deck and the posts. Once the stringers are secure, you can add the foot kicks and treads.

Cut a board (for this 2 x 8 deck) the width of the steps to support the stringers under the rim or end of the joists. Use pieces of the same 2 x wood to attach the board to the bottom edge of the joist.

Use another piece of material 2 x to place the back of the support board against a beam or beam. Attach the braces with joist hangers or deck screws.

Attach the posts to the legs as you did for the deck frame in How to Build a Deck: Post Holes and Framing.

Hold the stringers and hangers flush with the top of the 2 x 8 support and mark each hanger location.

Drill the pilot holes and attach the outer stringers with nails and screws. Secure the bottom stringers to the bottom posts with screws.

Attach the rest of the stringers and secure the posts to the bottom of the stringers with craft, anchors and carriage bolts. See How to Build a Deck: Composite Decking and Railing for step-by-step instructions on tie posts.

Drill pilot holes and attach the foot posts, attach the treated boards first and cover them with composite boards. Good to Know When attaching composite toe elements to treads, use color-matched composite screws.

Drill pilot holes and attach the treads, using a screw to place a drainage gap between the boards on each step.

Slide the post handles onto the posts. Cut the sleeves to length as needed. Glue the collars in place with PVC cement. Follow the package instructions.

Hold a bottom rail against the studs with the baluster holes centered. Mark the angle at each end. You will need to subtract enough from your measurements to allow room for the two brackets to join. Cut the train. Repeat the process with the other bottom rail.

Align the holes on each bottom rail with a corresponding top rail. Transfer the angles to the rails above and cut them accordingly.

Slide the brackets onto the bottom rail and mark the bracket locations on the top and bottom posts. Drill pilot holes and attach the rail with screws. Repeat the process with the other bottom rail.

The balusters need to be cut to match the angle of the rails. Hold the T-key against a post and rail underneath to get the correct angle.
